Gilroy – A 20-year-old Gilroy woman was taken to San Jose Regional Medical Center early Friday morning with major injuries after a two-vehicle accident on Highway 152 west of Bloomfield Road. The roadway was wet due to intermittent rain, which likely contributed to the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol report.
Irlanda Garcia, 24, of Gilroy was driving a Ford Contour eastbound as Janet Cano, 34, of Los Banos was traveling westbound in an Acura Integra. Both drivers told CHP officers they were driving 40mph, and according to the report, Garcia was driving too fast for conditions and hydroplaned into the westbound lane. Cano did not have time to evade the Contour and the front end of her Integra smashed into the side door of the Contour.
The 20-year-old female passenger of the Contour, whose name is not being released because of her injuries, according to CHP Officer Chris Armstrong, had to be extricated from the Contour by rescue personnel. She was not responsive. The road was closed for 45 minutes and traffic had to be diverted.
Garcia and Cano were also transported by ambulance to San Jose Regional complaining of pain. All of the women involved were wearing their seatbelts.
Neither driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to Armstrong.
The accident is still under investigation. Anyone with information may contact
