Steve Nemeth will have the unenviable job of continuing to rebuild the Gavilan College women’s basketball program that has had its ups and downs recently.

Nemeth, 55, is taking over as head coach for Mike Girardi, who accepted an assistant coaching position for the men’s basketball team at Cal State Stanislaus.

“One of areas that made me most attracted to Steve was his experience at the four-year level” said Gavilan Athletic Director Ron Hannon. “The ability to share his experiences as well as direct our women student-athletes to the next level to play basketball while earning their degrees is very important in the direction of our basketball program.”

Nemeth will be working for a part-time salary, and he said he may look for something he can do on the side when he is not coaching or teaching the basketball fundamentals and basketball conditioning classes.

“Coaching basketball is something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a kid,” Nemeth said. “It is an exciting opportunity but it is a little scary. My goal this year is to be competitive and have the women have a good experience.”

Although this is Nemeth’s first year as head coach, he is no stranger to the game of basketball.

Nemeth, who grew up in Santa Clara, was most recently employed at California State University-Los Angeles, where he has served as the Athletic Facilities/Event Manager for the past two years.

Prior to CSU-Los Angeles, Nemeth worked at Idaho State University in Pocatello, ID as an assistant women’s basketball coach. Nemeth also served as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. from 1991-96. In the Bay Area, he was an assistant coach at West Valley.

Practice starts on Oct. 15, and the first game is Nov. 10 against Yuba College.
