The annual Fourth of July fireworks show put on by the Morgan Hill Freedom Fest Committee is changing venues for the 2013 celebration, as the grand display will shoot off at the Outdoor Sports Center at 16500 Condit Road, rather than at Community Park at 299 W. Edmundson Ave.
Entertainment – which includes music from the Usual Suspects – begins at 6 p.m. The theme for the 2013 event is “Sing the Songs of America.”
Committee spokeswoman Frances Nance said the move will allow for bigger and better fireworks, more parking and easier access in and out of the facility.
“Our dedicated committee is working around the clock to ensure a smooth transition,” Nance said. “We really want to make sure the public enjoys the new venue, which we feel will only enhance the wonderful display.”
Nance mentioned that families can also now enjoy the many amenities the Aquatics Center offers just next door before walking over to the fireworks display.
The fireworks show is only part of the Fourth of July community celebration that is organized by the volunteer-run committee. It kicks off June 29 with the Bike Classic – which includes the second annual 100K ride – at Coyote Creek Trail and then the July 3 Patriotic Sing inside the Britton Middle School Gymnasium and Family Music Fest at the Community Cultural Center.
The July 4 activities include the Freedom Run, the Car Cruise & Show, the Fourth of July parade and culminating with the fireworks show.
Last year, more than 100,000 people participated in the seven separate events that cost upwards of $100,000 – all of which came from sponsors and donations. Anyone interested in volunteering, becoming a sponsor or making a donation can visit the website at http://mhfreedomfest.com or on Facebook at MorganHillFreedomFest.
The Fourth of July celebration dates back to 1876, when it included a horse race and picnic for residents.
