Fred Evanchak passed away peacefully at his home on July 8, 2011.

Fred was born in Kellytown, PA on March 26, 1922, and was one of eleven children.

Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served during WW II, where he was a pharmacist, First Class. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Charo, which was part of the seventh fleet and it participated in all of the Pacific landings during the war. Fred was aboard ship in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the surrender.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, Fred came to San Francisco, as two of his brothers resided there, and began his career as a medical technician.

Fred later came to Hollister, working for local doctors in a laboratory. In 1952 Fred became an employee of Hazel Hawkins Hospital, later becoming the supervisor of the laboratory and retired in 1987.

Fred is survived by his wife, Audrey Evanchak and was preceded in death by his son Eric Evanchak and his daughter Karen Leon. He is also survived by his step-children Nancy Green (Woodrow) of Layton, UT; William Taylor (Helene) of Aiken, SC; and Barbara Mauro (Edward) of Hollister. Fred has seven grandchildren, Dayna Leon, Judson Green, Bryan Leon, Jory Green, Stephanie Mauro, Cody Taylor and Colleen Taylor. Fred also has five great-grandchildren; Payton Green, Stran Green, Adyson Cordova, Hadlee Green and Mia Cordova.

Fred will be missed and remembered by is family who he dearly loved and enjoyed.

A memorial service and a Celebration of Fred’s life will be held on Friday, July 15th beginning at 2:00 P.M. at the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home 870 San Benito St., Hollister. Inurnment will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery with military honors provided by Hollister Post 9242, V.F.W.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Fred’s memory to the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation; the Hospice of Monterey; or the donor’s favorite charity.
