Students at the Charter School of Morgan Hill run a one-acre farm as part of their science class. In addition to learning how to grow food, garden-based science reinforces textbook concepts, said science teacher Kathy Funk. “People need to know where their food comes from,” Funk said. During the summer months, Funk organizes a “farm camp” of sorts, with families volunteering to tend to the crops for a week. Families spend one or two hours a day during the week cleaning the chicken pens, feeding and watering the hens, watering the garden and harvesting the fruits and vegetables. That way, when school starts Aug. 18, there’ll be a “science laboratory” ready to go, Funk said.
