We get the government we deserve

That saying is more appropriate now than it has ever been. And, while it may seem a long way off, the November 2010 election for Governor of California will be here before we know it.

In fact, ads have already started running for the June 2010 primary election, nine months before ballots are cast.

There are a few things both voters and candidates need to do in advance of what could be an historic election.

Candidates must lay out specific plans to address California’s woes

Republican candidates, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, former Congressman Tom Campbell and State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, and Democratic candidates current Attorney General Jerry Brown and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom must speak specifically as to how they’ll solve the state’s huge financial quagmire.

How do they plan to close the budget deficit, specifically? How do they plan to solve the prison overcrowding problem, specifically? How do they plan to stanch the bleeding of businesses fleeing California?

Voters need to demand real answers, not just campaign platitudes

And, voters need to pay attention, educate themselves about all aspects of the issues and demand specifics from candidates.

Far too often, candidates get away with double speak. “I’m for balancing the budget, lowering taxes and increasing services.” Then we sigh, sit back and ask ourselves, “Sure, how are you going to accomplish that?”

Well, it’s time to start demanding specifics. Tell us what you want to cut to pay for the services you want to add.

Now, more than ever, it is vital to find the person who can work with the legislature and help get this state on the road to recovery. If we don’t demand specifics, we will wind up with “the government we deserve.”
