Not one but two championship teams, and at the same school, no less: Morgan Hill can be very proud of its Live Oak High boys and girls water polo teams, which last weekend clinched the T-Cal championships.

We salute not only the student athletes but also their parents and coaches. Boys coach Mack Haines and girls coach Bryan Traverso were promptly dunked in the pool following their teams’ wins. Obviously, these dedicated coaches who have given many hours and given up their weekends for the teams, have found a formula to bring out the best in their athletes.

The parents, too, have contributed greatly to the championships, also giving up weekends and making sure their athletes get to practice, particularly those early morning ones, get their work done and still have time to eat and sleep properly, not to mention the emotional support they provide.

The champions themselves are to be congratulated, not only for their winning seasons but for disciplining themselves to reach this peak. Even with the most attentive coach and parents, it is still up to the students to get their work done, to maintain the necessary grade point average, to dedicate the time to train, to eat right, and still manage to have some sort of social life. The discipline they exhibit will serve them well in whatever they choose to pursue after high school.

The sixth-ranked boys team will play No. 3 Gunn on Saturday at Independence High School. We hope they win, but as a community are proud of what they have already accomplished.

The eighth-ranked girls team played No. 9 Soquel on Wednesday; unfortunately they lost 9-8 in overtime. They should still be proud of their successes, their season, their dedication and determination.

Both teams have given Live Oak students yet another reason to be proud of their school; we are salute them for that and for the examples they set for other Morgan Hill students.
