Dear Editor,
We hope you’ll join us this year to pray for our community, state and nation as we consider the theme, God Shed His Grace on Thee. We will gather for a continental breakfast, worship, scripture readings and prayer (donations at door) on Thursday, May 5, 7-9am in the gym at Crossroads Christian Center, 145 Wright Ave.
Why a National Day of Prayer? President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of prayer, fasting and humility in 1863. President Harry Truman signed a resolution passed by the United States Congress in 1952 that initiated a National Day of Prayer. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan designated the first Thursday in May as the official National Day of Prayer. Now, each year the President signs a proclamation asking people in our nation to gather to pray. With many problems and needs in our wonderful country, we rejoice that we can meet freely together to pray and worship together.
This year we’re including a wonderful group of pastors and fellowships not only from Morgan Hill and San Martin but including the rest of the South Valley-Gilroy, Hollister and San Juan Bautista. A welcome will be given by Pastor Sammy Vazquez of Crossroads Christian Center. The worship team from Family of Christ in Gilroy will sing two songs in Spanish. The introduction with the theme verses, Hebrews 4:14-16, will be given by Pastor Eric Smith of South Valley Community Church in Gilroy.
The worship will be led by Peter Ecksteen and his worship team from Abundant Life in Hollister. Other pastors and staff participating are: Pastor Matt Valencia of Calvary Chapel Gilroy, Pastor Malcolm McPhail of New Hope Community in Gilroy (Chaplain for the Gilroy Police Department), Debbie Kenyon (Children’s Minister) of West Hills Community Church in Morgan Hill, Pastor Ed Breedon of San Martin Presbyterian Church, Pastor Mark Inouye of Morgan Hill Presbyterian Church, Pastor David Rodriguez (U.S. Naval Reserve Chaplain) of Hollister Presbyterian Church, Rev. Matthew Trujillo of Temple Immanuel in Morgan Hill, Pastor Dave Whitaker and Deborah Thimsen-Villa of Morgan Hill Bible Church, Pastor Bruce Bannister of Hillside Christian Fellowship in Hollister, and Pastors Carlos and Maxine Alferez and Pastor Carmen Lindsey of Jubilee South Valley in Morgan Hill.
The morning will be closed by the singing of America by Beverly Blount from Gilroy Presbyterian Church.
We invite all who are interested to join us for a time of prayer for our nation.
Wanda Puder, coordinator, South Valley National Day of Prayer, Morgan Hill
