Got a green thumb but no place to display the results? Beginning later this month, a spot will open near downtown for wanna-be gardeners without a garden.
In January, the city of Morgan Hill allowed the nonprofit Morgan Hill Community Garden the use of a small plot of land off Butterfield Boulevard between the South County Courthouse and the VTA parking lot just east of downtown. Now, the first community garden will open on the .3-acre plot. Morgan Hill residents can apply for one of the 44 plots on Sept. 16.
During the Labor Day weekend, volunteers of MHCG spent most of their time working on the land pulling the weeds with volunteer Gary Sluder, who donated his time and provided his tractor to grade the land.
“Having a community garden in town is a great opportunity for Morgan Hill residents to get involved and help grow the community,” said Sherrie Wren, president of the nonprofit MHCG. “We have in Morgan Hill eight elementary schools and two middle schools and one of our goals is to educate children about organic gardening.”
“it’s going to be an educational center because we are going to teach people how to grow vegetables using bay-friendly gardening and how to compost and use vermiculture,” said Steven Stratton, a board member of the nonprofit. “It will provide people who live in apartments a way to grow their own food in a sustainable system.”
Gardeners can use the plot for one year and renew the contract to apply for a second year.
Morgan Hill residents who are interested in renting an individual garden plot in the community garden should meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, upstairs in the Granary building 17500 Depot St.
Gardeners can build their plot Saturday, Sept. 18.
A grand opening celebration will be held Oct. 2 at the garden.
