The city will purchase about $2.5 million worth of fire-fighting equipment, including fire engines, a pumper truck and a 105-foot ladder truck for its new fire and emergency medical services provider, Calfire, who will take over the services as of Jan. 1, 2013.
The Morgan Hill City Council unanimously approved the purchase of the Pierce Manufacturing Fire Apparatus vehicles and equipment from Golden State Fire Apparatus at its Aug. 22 meeting.
As part of the contract with Calfire, the details of which are still being negotiated by city and Calfire staff, the city has to provide Calfire with the apparatus, according to a city staff report.
The council approved a five-year contract earlier this year that is expected to save the city about $800,000 per year off its current contract with the Santa Clara County Central Fire District, which ends in December.
This year the city paid Central Fire District about $5.6 million for fire and EMS services.
The purchase of apparatus and equipment includes three pickup trucks, two pumper trucks, a 105-foot ladder truck, equipment for the two pumpers, and three camper shells for the pickups, according to the city staff report.
About $110,300 of the purchase will be funded by fire impact fees, and the remaining $2.4 million will be paid for through a 15-year lease-purchase with Oshkosh Capital.
