Gilroy Gardens had its largest-ever Gilroy Appreciation Day March 30 when more than 9,000 locals turned up to get the ball rolling on 2013’s summer of fun.
Now, Barb Granter, vice president and general manager of Gilroy Gardens, wants everyone to know about the new and continuing Community Initiatives programs on offer this summer at the family theme park located at 3050 Hecker Pass Highway in Gilroy.
New Programs:
•Summer Day Camp – In partnership with the City Parks & Recreation Department, the Gardens will offer a summer day camp program “Summer Fun in the Gilroy Sun” that will run for two separate weeks: July 8 to July 12 and Aug. 12 to Aug. 16. A summer camp overnight will take place Aug. 1 to Aug. 2. For more information visit www.cityofgilroy.org and print a 2013 Summer Activity Guide.
•Gilroy Reads – In partnership with the Gilroy Library, Gilroy Gardens is challenging residents to “Read Their Way to Family Fun!” This exciting pilot project will reward students and parents for using the public library. A valid library card and proof of use will earn tickets for the 2013 season.
•Art in the Park – Gilroy Gardens is giving local artists access to paint, draw, sculpt or photograph on the grounds. All art created in or related to Gilroy Gardens will be considered for exhibition in the new Art in the Park Gallery. For information, a list of Artist Access Days and to register, email

. The initiative will incorporate children’s art workshops and opportunities for children’s art exhibitions in the future.
Returning Programs:
• Natural Science Days – A firm favorite since its inception in 2004, Gilroy Gardens will once again partner with local participating schools and subsidize students to use the Gardens as a living laboratory. Students from grades two and four become “nature detectives” as they move through six docent-led education stations, becoming ambassadors for the environment along the way.
•Student Community Service Hours – Started in 2012 by a Leadership Gilroy class, the program offers students a chance to gain experience and training prior to entering the workforce. The Gardens is committed to offering community service hours to students to help them graduate.
