Lee: Fuel School in session

Welcome to Fuel School 101. Yes, there’s a science to properly fueling the body for competition. High school athletes, take notice. For this article, I’ll focus on the ubiquitous energy bar, which has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry. San Benito High junior three-sport standout Marisa Villegas loves Clif Bars; last year at the end of the track season, Villegas told me in addition to her regular meals, she sometimes ate two to three Clif Bars a day during her most intense workout sessions/races (hey, when you run as fast as she does, you need some serious fuel).

Grouchy grandma talks her way out of family events

DEAR ABBY: My grandmother is 75 years old and, unfortunately, very unpleasant to be around. She has made many hurtful remarks in the past, which have led some family members to shut her out of their lives.

Scratched eye isn’t healing

Q: We took Fiber, our terrier, to the vet for an injury to his eye. He scratched his cornea running after a ball in the bushes. The vet gave us some antibiotic ointment to put in his eye once or twice a day. But he’s not getting any better. The vet wants to see him again to do some tests and we’re not sure what to do. Should we take him to a specialist? Why isn’t the eye getting better?

Parents upset over restructuring aide job for autism students

The Morgan Hill Unified School District school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to restructure all aides within the district into a new position. This new position, called a paraprofessional, would see a 5-percent salary increase compared to the current instructional aide position, but at the expense of the paraeducators, who will see a 30-percent cut in their salary.

Help make Santa Clara County healthier

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is launching the public process to create a new health element for the General Plan, beginning with three Healthy Communities Workshops April 12, 26 and 30, to seek ideas from the public. Many factors determine the well-being of a community. Access to healthy foods, green space, the ability to get around with or without a car, affordable housing and easy access to essential services all play a part. The county is considering how to make local communities healthier.

Hospitals potential tax initiative is a wake up call

The recent news that Saint Louise Regional Hospital is considering placing a sales tax initiative on the November ballot is a wake up call.

Defining healthy is not always easy

While shopping over the holidays, I ran into an old friend. "It's great to see you, but you're literally half the person I remember," I told her. She had dramatically lost weight, having recently undergone a gastric bypass - a stomach stapling surgery performed on obese people to rapidly lose weight.
