Question of the week: “Should the United States take the issue of climate change more seriously in the wake of the destruction caused by hurricane Sandy?”

Jeff Smith: No. They already take it too seriously – as in this question implying that human activity had anything to do with this hurricane. It didn’t. They used to call it global warming, but now it’s been changed to “climate change” so any weather pattern can be blamed on humans. I just don’t buy it. The proponents of this concept say we can’t question it anymore – it’s a proven fact in their minds. But, isn’t that what science is all about – questioning things? If so many people question it, the “science” must not be too convincing.

Karen Anderson: Not sure. We should certainly be alert to major changes and keep an eye on low lying cities butin a discussion by scientists who believe in global warming, there was a dispute as to the origin of the hurricane. Hazel in 1954 had higher winds.

Hank Miller: Yes. Whether it is Sandy or any other natural, supernatural or un-natural event, it is time for the U.S. and all other nations to wake up and accept the scientific consensus.

David Cohen: Yes it should take climate change more seriously, regardless of the hurricane.

Lisa Pampuch: Yes. We clearly cannot afford to continue to pander to climate-change deniers any longer. Let’s listen to the scientists who’ve studied this, the overwhelming majority of whom agree that climate change is real, and get serious about addressing this problem.

Julian Mancias: No. It should already be serious enough.

Dave Appling: Absolutely. It’s abundantly clear by now that climate change is no myth, and that we humans are causing or at the very least exacerbating it. And we don’t know where or when the tipping point is. Our children will pay an incalculable price if we don’t act, and lead.

Bert Berson: Yes. The United States should have taken climate change seriously years ago. Perhaps Sandy will be a wake-up call.
