The annual Academic Performance Index report was released today and it shows Morgan Hill Unified School District improving by 10 points to a base number of 766. The goal for California schools is a score of 800 or higher.

The base API ranking is calculated using the test results of the previous year from the STAR test and California High School Exit Exam for older students.

In addition, the base API report includes API growth targets that each school and each numerically significant subgroup of students at each school, must meet.

Hispanic students, who make up about 40 percent of the Morgan Hill Unified School District, still remain below proficient with a score of 679, just a one point increase since last year. White students’ API base is 834 and they comprise about 45 percent of MHUSD.

The poorest performing subgroup however is those categorized as socioeconomically disadvantaged students with a score of 655 and a population of about 2,000. There were 6,762 students included in the 2009 API report. English learners’ number is 676, up three points from last year with a population of about 1,700.

As part of the state Superintendent Jack O’Connell’s Closing the Achievement Gap initiative, an effort had been made to change the way subgroup growth targets are calculated. As a result, now growth targets for lower-achieving student subgroups are seeing more and more success.

See how Morgan Hill Unified Schools fared in 2008, 2009 and their API target for 2010.
