The City of Morgan Hill is seeking applications from residents interested in serving on the planning commission. The city is recruiting to fill one unexpired term on the seven-member commission, for the term ending June 1, 2025, according to the city’s website.
The planning commission approves various permits and serves as an advisory body to the city council on matters related to city growth and development, and on such other matters as may be requested by the council. Each commissioner serves a term of four years.
Application forms and appointment information are available on the City of Morgan Hill website (https://tinyurl.com/yeyk68hj) or in the city clerk’s office, 17575 Peak Ave., Morgan Hill, or by calling 408.779.7271. Applications will be accepted in the city clerk’s office until 5pm July 22, or until filled. Interviews before the city council are tentatively scheduled for 5:30pm Aug. 3.
Convert your turf
In response to new emergency water conservation regulations from the state, the City of Morgan Hill is encouraging property owners to convert their thirsty landscaping with low-water-use landscape. The Landscape Rebate Program, offered in partnership with Valley Water, also helps customers retrofit existing irrigation equipment with high-efficiency equipment.
The California State Water Board adopted new water conservation restrictions that took effect June 10, requiring many property owners to cease using potable water for irrigating non-functional turf, according to a press release from the City of Morgan Hill. The restriction applies to the owners and managers of commercial, industrial and institutional properties—including homeowners associations—throughout California.
Non-functional turf includes any ground cover surface of mowed grass that is solely ornamental and not otherwise used for human recreation purposes, says the press release.
The emergency regulation does not apply to individual residences, school fields, sports fields, areas regularly used for civic or community events and water used to maintain trees.
The regulation will remain in effect for one year or until the State Water Board modifies, readopts or rescinds it, says the city’s press release. A fine of $500 per day may be levied for violations.
The local Landscape Rebate Program is available until June 30 or until funds are depleted. The program is designed to encourage residents and businesses to convert their high-water-use landscaping to more efficient vegetation or artificial turf—and to upgrade inefficient watering equipment.

Lunch at the library
The Santa Clara County Library District is partnering with Silicon Valley YMCA and Second Harvest Food Bank this summer to offer free grab-and-go meals to children age 0-18, and their caregivers. Meals include breakfast and lunch.
The free meal program starts June 13 at the Morgan Hill Library, 660 West Main Ave., and June 21 at the Gilroy Library, 350 West Sixth Street in Gilroy. No registration is necessary.
Meals can be picked up 12-1pm Monday through Friday, while supplies last.
Locals graduate from Ohio University
Two Morgan Hill residents—Mildred Cambronero and Alida Pjanic—graduated from Ohio University following the spring 2022 semester. Both earned their bachelor of science Baccalaureate Nursing degrees.
More than 4,400 students graduated with bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degrees from Ohio University for spring semester 2022, says a press release from the university. The graduates represented many areas of the United States and an abundance of countries, including: China, Belarus, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Mexico.
Slevin makes Dean’s List
Catherine D. Slevin, of Morgan Hill, was named to the University of Scranton’s Dean’s List for the spring semester. The Dean’s List recognizes students for academic excellence. A student must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better with a minimum number of credit hours during the semester to make the Dean’s List, says a press release.
Slevin is a junior kinesiology major in the University’s Panuska College of Professional Studies.
Baltazar earns honors
Jaylene Baltazar, of Morgan Hill, was named to the Gonzaga University Dean’s List for the spring semester. Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.84 grade-point average to be listed.
Gonzaga University is a private Catholic University providing a Jesuit education to more than 7,500 students. The campus is located near downtown Spokane, Wash.
MH residents graduate from Gonzaga
Brian Steuber, of Morgan Hill, graduated from Gonzaga University this spring with a bachelor of science in computer science, according to a press release. Steuber graduated with cum laude honors.
Steuber graduated in Gonzaga’s May 8 commencement ceremony.
