Salinas – The Sobrato football team took a few lumps at the hands of Alisal Friday night when they lost not only the game 57-0 but also quarterback Matt Kellett.
Kellett took a blow to his head in the third quarter after he threw an interception. According to head coach Jeff Patterson, Kellett possibly suffered a concussion and had neck pains which sent him to the hospital.
Patterson said Kellett more than likely only has a concussion, but that medical personell wanted to be cautious.
With the loss, Sobrato falls to 2-3.
Alisal now extends is streak to four games since losing to Palma in its season opener.
By the end of the first half, it was clear that the Bulldogs were outmatched.
Despite a few defensive highlights, the Trojans rolled hard from the beginning of the game.
Alisal scored on a 48-yard run by Anthony Mose with 10:25 to play in the first quarter.
After a quick three and out by Sobrato, the Trojans added to their score with a 53-yard drive in four and a half minutes concluding with a four-yard run by Jose Romero, taking a 14-0 lead.
And the Trojans would just add more.
After Kellett mishandled a snap on a punt, giving Alisal the ball on the Bulldog eight, David Estrada punched it in on one play for a 21-0 lead.
The Trojans scored two more times by the end of the half — once on an Estrada 25-yard run and again when Romero sprinted 39 yards. As a result, Alisal lead 36-0 at the half.
The Bulldogs did have one bright spot when Mike Mira blocked a field goal attempt late in the second quarter.
In the second half, Alisal put the game away with three quick touchdowns in the third quarter, two coming by way of the turnover.
The Bulldogs were able to get some offense going in the third quarter when they converted their only two first downs of the game.
After Alisal scored its 57th point, the Sobrato defense denied the score to get any worse in the final quarter.
Patterson credited his team with having a never-give-up spirit, despite the lopsided end result.
“This team is going to be better,” Patterson said. “They just played a good football team tonight. … We are going to be successful. This year, some. Next year, definitely.”
