It
’s that time again. New shoes, spiffy new hair cuts, backpacks
and the most up-to-date jeans, along with smiles of expectation and
frowns of hesitation. It’s back to school time.

Time too for grownups – parents and others – to be extra careful behind the wheel, while driving near residential neighborhoods and parks and, especially, near schools. During last school year the police department regularly heard tales of people speeding through those 25 mph areas even when “children were present.”
Even more chilling reports say the speeders frequently have just dropped their own kids off at the school so they must have some idea of what’s at stake.
Please, people, use a little common sense. Your kid is more special and deserves to live undamaged more than the others? We don’t think so. Speed limits – for the most part – are set for a reason and 25 mph gives a driver time to keep the car on the road while still looking out for a little body darting from between parked cars or tumbling out of a minivan.
Pay attention when you approach cross walks – even when there are no kids visible. New fluorescent green warning signs that were mounted near all Morgan Hill schools should help keep drivers alert as do the vibrant green signs at downtown crosswalks.
Drive safely, be alert. Save everybody a lot of grief and be careful out there.
