GILROY – Joseph Trevino’s paints abstract art using different sizes of canvases and mediums. He said he begins a piece by making several drawings.
“I love playing with shapes and forms to make them my own,” Trevino said. “Sometimes it ends up being a totally different piece.”
Many of his paintings include the shape of instruments, women holding children and of two people.
“You don’t think of anything else but what you’re working on,” Trevino said of painting. “I get a lot of pleasure from it. When I’m doing it, really in a different place.”
Trevino’s art has been shown at Gilroy Public Library exhibits, Gavilan Gallery exhibits, several art and wine shows and is currently on display at the Tait Museum in Los Gatos, where he is an artist member. He is planning to display some of his work in the Garlic City Coffee Shop on Monterey Street by February.
Although his art has been displayed in several different venues, Trevino used to have a hard time letting himself sell his pieces. He didn’t think he needed to when he was working full-time.
“I could sell a lot more, but I get attached to my work,” he said. “People tell me I have to let go.”
When painting, Trevino said the most important thing to lay your heart onto the canvas and not to worry about how people will react to it.
“You can’t be afraid,” he said. “Just go with it.”
