After reading the May 14 edition of the Morgan Hill Times, I feel compelled to send you my plea. I am appalled that the idea of an auto mall is ready to pass with the City Council to raise the “pallid tax revenues.” This from the same people who fought In-N-Out Burger because it wasn’t a Gateway-appropriate restaurant.
Would you rather have the first things people see from the freeway be an auto mall and a Harley store? This mother of two very young children would keep on driving, thinking this town was just like all the others.
I can guarantee that tax revenues would skyrocket if the council sought and approved such businesses as Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Cost Plus, Chevy’s (or any child-friendly restaurant, of which there are practically none here in town.)
If you’re going for a big box store, how about Babies-R-Us or Toys-R-Us, Pier One Imports, Barnes and Noble or Borders? All of the moms in Las Madres travel to San Jose to give that city our tax revenues for items sold at these stores when we’d much rather be driving less and investing the money in our community.
These are just the thoughts of a rushed mother of two, who moved to Morgan Hill because it was unique and had a small-town feel. We can bring more money here without auto malls and Harley stores. Build business that the people who live here will frequent, and this little town will become even more of a gem.
