Tonopah, Nev. – Postmaster L. L. Mushett of Tonopah has announced that plans are practically completed to put a wireless service in direct communication with San Francisco.

Sacramento – The Southern Pacific Railroad Company last week announced a raise of 2-1/2 cents an hour to its employes in the Sacramento blacksmith shops. The men had threatened to go on a strike.

Napa – The Napa & Lakeport Railroad Company has taken a new lease of life and has announced its intention to commence a number of suits for rights of way across property in Napa county which it has not been able to secure through gift or purchase.

Tacoma – Captain George V. Williams of the steamship Lyra was arrested here on his arrival from the Orient, charged by the customs officers with the illegal entry of curios for the purpose of defrauding the Government of the duty.

Berkeley – Announcement has been made by the university authorities here that the department of physics is to offer a new course of lectures next term, including experimental illustration on “Some Modern Aspects of Radiant Activity.” The course is to be conducted by Professors F. Slate and E. P. Lewis.

San Francisco – Fifty-eight mechanics from Sydney and Auckland arrived here on the Oceanic liner Sierra, attracted by the opportunities for work at lucrative wages in this city.

San Diego – The council received the estimate of the city engineer on extensions of the water system to meet the demands of the city. Extensions are demanded in every ward, and as the city now has an unlimited water supply, it will be a paying investment to extend the system. The estimate is $308,000, and the council proposes to call a bond election to vote $300,000 in bonds for the work.

Oakland – At a meeting of the Board of Public Works City Electrician Babcock presented a report showing that electric street lights, which the city will use during the fiscal year, will cost $69,322. The appropriation made by the City Council to cover the lighting of the city was $68,376, and the city is therefore facing a deficit of $946, unless the expense is curtailed in some way.

San Francisco – The great dearth of nurses is a matter that is agitating physicians at the hospitals, especially as regards the care of those dependent on the Red Cross Society and relief corporation. All wards and beds have been filled with indigent patients since the earthquake disaster and the situation bids fair to continue. The recent outbreak of typhoid cases is causing concern, for this disease demands particular attention, and the problem of nurses is one to be solved. Each hospital is shorthanded, and a call was sent by doctorsin the relief work to Los Angeles in the hope that a supply of nurses will respond.
