Athletics 9, Angels 3
The Athletics beat the visiting Angels 9-3 on Saturday in a game in which the Angels had difficulty capitalizing on scoring opportunities. The Angels scored first on a single from John Forestieri, a sacrifice from Michael Dukes, and an RBI single from Jim Hagan to score Forestieri.
The A’s scored two runs in the bottom of the inning on a single by Kyle Kinsey, a hit into center field for a double by Salinas, and a crushing RBI hit by Kyle Villa into deep left field. Villa, however, was denied the home run on a great relay from left fielder Dylan Kral to shortstop Conor Havstad, who then fired the long throw into catcher Jim Hagan, tagging Villa out at the plate.
The Angels threatened in the fourth inning on a single by Pasek and a double by Havstad that seemed it would score Pasek. But a great throw from A’s center fielder Kinsey to catcher Hagiperos barely caught Pasek at the plate. But the Angels were able to score one run when Havstad came in on a single from Howard. The A’s added two runs in the bottom of the inning on two walks, a throwing error by the Angels, and a sacrifice from Eduardo Sanchez to increase their lead to 6-2.
The Angels threatened again in the fifth inning, loading the bases on successive walks and a single from Forestieri. However, a popup to A’s catcher Hagiperos, a strikeout from pitcher Perez and a grounder to shortstop Villa for the third out ended the threat with no runs scored.
The A’s added another run in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Hagiperos and a double by Goyette. The Angels scored one more run in the sixth inning on a single by Havstad, who advanced to third on a steal and a balk and scored on a ball hit into left field by Howard. However, Howard was tagged trying for a double on a good relay from left fielder James Aguilar to shortstop Goyette to second baseman Villa.
The A’s extended their lead with another two runs in the bottom of the sixth on successive singles by Villa, Mason, and Perez. The last scoring threat of the Angels was ended in the seventh inning when the Angels had a runner on third with two outs who attempted to come home on a passed ball but was caught at the plate by A’s catcher Hagiperos.
Cubs 5, Mets 2
A solid defensive performance paced the Cubs, who played nearly flawlessly in the field, keeping the Mets from scoring even as they out-hit the Cubs. Key hits by Ryan Mitchell and Trever Everson plated runs for the Cubs and Aiden Styczynski’s two runs and ability to reach base kept the Mets on their heels in the field.

Brent Newton’s fine pitching performance prevented the Mets from getting clutch hits. Newton pitched three innings with 10 strikeouts for the Cubs. Nader Elaskary pitched four innings with four strikeouts for the Mets.
