Live Oak softball defeats Leigh to win Consolation Bracket
Championship at Wilcox Tournament
Morgan Hill – The Live Oak Acorns softball team bounced back from an opening weekend loss to St. Francis in the Wilcox Tournament to capture the Consolation Bracket Championship this weekend at Mission College.
Live Oak shutout Wilcox, 7-0, had a 10-1 win over Independence and then defeated Leigh, the No.2 ranked team in the Central Coast Section, 2-1 for the consolation championship.
The Acorns won all three of their games behind pitcher Tricia Goularte, who allowed just eight hits over the weekend.
Offensively for the Live Oak, catcher April Herrera went 5-for-10 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Sarah Locarnini went 5-for-11 on the weekend with a double, a stolen base and two RBIs, while Kelly McDonald went 3-for-8 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Acorns.
It was a successful end to a tournament that didn’t start out as Live Oak would have liked it to.
On April 8, the Acorns opened the tournament with a tie, 3-3, against Santa Clara. Alyssa Adamo went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBIs for Live Oak. Brittney Ondich drew three walks in the game and stole two bags.
In their second game the Acorns were feeling much more comfortable with a win against Los Gatos, 5-0. Goularte earned the win, allowing just four hits. Taylor Sutton went 2-for-4 with a double and Sabrina LaCorte went 1-for-3 with a RBI in the game for the Acorns.
In the third game the Acorns were handed the 3-2 loss by St. Francis in a game that was called in the sixth inning. Goularte took the loss for Live Oak, giving up six hits. Adamo and Herrera each went 2-for3 at the plate. Herrera drove in both of Live Oak’s runs in the third inning.
