Deadline for Absentee Ballot Request

The deadline to request an absentee ballot by mail for the June primary election in Santa Clara County is May 30.

After the deadline, absentee ballots can only be obtained in person at the Registrar of Voters’ Office at 1555 Berger Drive, Building 2 in San Jose.

All requests must be received no later than 5pm on Tuesday, and postmarks are not accepted. Absentee applications are available on the back cover of the sample ballot and online at www.sccvote.org.

All ballots must be received no later than 8pm on Election Day, June 6. Again, postmarks are not accepted.

Absentee voters who plan to mail their ballots are encouraged to complete and return them as soon as possible to meet the deadline. Absentee ballots can also be returned in person at the registrar’s office or at any Santa Clara County polling place on election day. Voters may authorize a family member or member of their household to deliver the ballot by completing the appropriate section of the absentee return envelope.

Voters may cast their ballots early at the registrar’s office from 8am to 5pm from Monday to Friday, as well as Saturday, May 27, from 9am to 3pm. Weekend voting will continue Saturday, June 3, and Sunday, June 4, from 9am to 3pm. Early and weekend voting are open to all registered voters.

The Registrar of Voters’ Office will also be open for voting from 7am to 8pm on Election Day.

Gas prices affecting holiday travel

Fewer than 5 million Californians were expected to travel 50 miles or more during the Memorial Day weekend – up less than 1 percent from last year – as the result of rising gas prices, according to a press release from AAA.

AAA expected 4 million of the travelers would drive and 722,000 will fly.

According to AAA, the number of flights were slightly down from last year.

Safety tips for prom and graduation celebrations

In a recent survey, 25 percent of high school students admitted to driving while intoxicated or being in the car with a driver who had been drinking.

As the school year comes to an end, Karyn Sinunu, a candidate for the office of Santa Clara County District Attorney, suggests that parents take a proactive role with their children.

Sinunu suggests that parents talk with their children and let them know the consequences of driving after drinking. She also suggests that parents set limits for their children, such as a curfew, and be willing to say no.

Sinunu also suggests that parents make themselves available to give a late night ride or other assistance.
