The Morgan Hill Young Gunz finished runners-up in their first tournament, the 9-and-under AAA Super Spring NIT held Saturday and Sunday at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale.

The Young Gunz went 4-0 in pool play, with two victories decided in the final inning. In the first one, PJ Kissee drew a base-loaded walk to score Nathan Medeiros for the winning run, as Morgan Hill completed a comeback from three runs down. In the second, the Young Gunz trailed by four only to tie it with Cristian Martinez’s two-run single. They won it on Aiden Schilling’s sacrifice fly that scored Taylor Wake on a close play at home.

The locals reached the championship game but lost to a team from Santa Clara.

“I was very proud of my team,” Morgan Hill manager Mitch Martinez said. “Each one of our Young Gunz players are all part of this successful tournament weekend. I was not surprised they did so well. They were looking so forward to this tournament – especially since our first one was canceled three weeks ago.”

Morgan Hill received dominant pitching by Kai Perry, Connor Hennings, Isaiah Webb and Kissee, and strong hitting by Robert Vukcevich, Martinez, Hennings, Webb and Kissee. Gabriel LaGatta, Schilling and Medeiros made great plays in the field.
