The Morgan Hill Buddhist Community Center will host the 52nd annual Haru Matsuri event along with the 16th Annual Northern California Taiko Expo from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 15. It will include cultural and historical displays, martial arts and Tai Chi demonstrations, Asian cuisine, and of course, lots of Taiko.

The Taiko Expo will feature seven Taiko drum groups from the Bay Area and Northern California. San Jose Taiko Dojo, Morgan Hill’s own Sandoshin Taiko and Watsonville Taiko, are just three of the seven

groups to perform.

From its humble beginnings as a Sunday school fundraiser, the Haru Matsuri has blossomed into a cultural event, with support from local businesses, community organizations and individual

volunteers.

The focus of this event is to provide cultural awareness and insight into the heritage of Japanese Americans, their contributions and historical significance within the local community and at

large.

Recently, the emphasis has been on preserving the legacy of the pioneering Japanese American families in South Santa Clara County. The gathering of historical artifacts, such as photos, farming implements and written documentation is an on-going process.  A portion of the items gathered so far, will be on display at the festival along with the tribute to WWII Nisei Veterans display. The veterans’ display is one of the most extensive collections in Northern California. This is a great event for the family pocket book. There is no charge for admission or parking. Please note that outside food and beverages and pets are not allowed.

The event grounds are located across from the soccer complex at 16450 Murphy Ave., Morgan Hill. Access to the main free parking area is at the intersection of Murphy and Barrett avenues. Parking guides will direct traffic to the lot. Visit on the web at: www.mhbcc.org or call,  (408) 779-9009.
