SPORTS SHORTS: LOHS, SHS taking part in Dig Pink girls volleyball event Saturday

Morgan Hill resident Ricky Martinez led a 12-and-under U.S. select team to a first-place finish in the 33rd annual youth baseball tournament in Sonora, Mexico, from April 28 to May 1.

Martinez, a sixth-grader at Valley Christian High School and former Morgan Hill Pony All-Star, led all players in seven offensive categories, including batting average (.682), on-base percentage (.720) and home runs (four). He was selected to the all-tournament team.

The U.S. finished 6-1 and won its second-ever title at the tournament, which has been dominated by local teams. The U.S. beat tournament host Sonora A 9-0 in the final in Hermosillo before a crowd of more than 3,000. It avenged an opening loss in pool play.

Martinez homered in a 3-for-4 effort in the final.
