At long last, the high school sports season is off and running.

Sobrato kicked off the competition with its girls volleyball match Monday evening against St. Francis-Watsonville.

Action resumes Wednesday with Live Oak taking on former Tri-County Athletic League rival San Benito in both girls volleyball and tennis and Sobrato playing Andrew Hill in girls volleyball..

It’s always fun to see the excitement surrounding the start of the season. Every player and coach is full of optimism.

Both of the high schools in town are in the midst of interesting times.

For the first time, Sobrato has a senior class and will be competing in only its second season of varsity sports.

Meanwhile, Live Oak is working to maintain its competitive athletic program as it adjusts to life in a two high school town.

To top it off, both schools are experiencing a shift north as they have moved from the Tri-County Athletic League, with teams in Gilroy, Salinas and Monterey, to the San Jose-based Blossom Valley Athletic League.

It should be a fun time to follow Morgan Hill sports and watch how Sobrato attempts to build itself into a winning athletic program and how Live Oak maintains its strong sports tradition.

I always have encouraged people to make it out to a high school game whenever you get a chance. Some of these sports you won’t see played anywhere else. And other sports, you won’t be able to attend for even one-tenth the price of a high school game.

The season is officially underway, don’t let it pass you by.
