Gilroy Tennis Club hosts Hot Fun tourney On Saturday, June 4,
the Gilroy Tennis Club hosted the Hot Fun in the Summertime Men
’s and Women’s Doubles Tournament. The ladies played at Las
Animas Veterans’ Park and the men played at Gilroy High School.
Kathy Gonzales and Patty Ramirez won the women’s 8.0 division and
Elena Ayala and Kathy Cabassa were finalists. Lora Bozzo and Iris
Kabert won the ladies’ 6.0 divisio
n and Jeanie Alaimo and Gay McLaughlin were finalists. On the
men’s side, the 8.0-8.5 winners were Pat McBrearty and Ed Cecena,
and Jeff Anderson and Bob Schuman were finalists. Chris Bhola and
Gary Melching were the 6.5-7.5 winners, and Ray Blagoff and Bill
Alaimo were finalists.

Following the tournament, Ed and Lucy Grisetti and their crew prepared a barbecue for members and players.

The next tournament will be the NTRP Gilroy Garlic Tournament on July 9-10. This is the Tournament of the Year for Northern California as voted on by USTA members.

Gavilan baseball camp

Gavilan College will hold its inaugural co-ed baseball camp beginning June 20. The camp, which will be led by Gavilan baseball head coach Neal Andrade, Gavilan assistant coaches and players, is for children ages 7-13 who are interested in learning the basic skills to improve their baseball talent. Two five-day sessions will be held, the first beginning on Monday, June 20 and ending Friday, June 24 and the second beginning on Monday, July 18 and ending Friday, July 22. Each day, the camp will take place from 9am to 12pm at the Gavilan College baseball field. The fee for each session is $75. Campers should bring a glove, bat, hat, baseball shoes, sweatshirt and a snack.

Buick Scramble set for June 26 at Gilroy GC

The Buick Scramble, the world’s largest amateur golf tournament, is scheduled to host a local championship at Gilroy Golf Course on Sunday, June 26.

Sponsored by Gilroy Pontiac Buick, four-person teams with certified USGA handicap indexes are eligible to compete in the Buick Scramble Local Championship at Gilroy Golf Course.

Winning teams will advance to compete in the Buick Scramble PGA Sectional Championships in the summer.

Two winning teams from each PGA Sectional Championship will advance to the Buick Scramble National Championships, scheduled for Oct. 13-16 at Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Interested teams can sign up for the local championship at the golf shop through June 25.

Tiger Woods returns as the Buick Scramble Honorary Chairman for the 2005 season.

As the Buick Scramble Honorary Chairman, Woods is scheduled to present the trophies to the 2005 Buick Scramble National Champions at the awards ceremony following the conclusion of the final round of the national championships.

The PGA of America sanctions the Buick Scramble, now in its 22nd season and fourth under the Buick banner.

The Buick Scramble hosts more than 1,500 local championships nationwide annually. Local winners advance to one of 104 PGA Sectional Championships, with those winning teams advancing to the Buick Scramble National Championships.

Entry fees are $100 per person. This includes a variety of Buick Scramble tee-gifts, greens fees, golf carts and incentives, including a dozen Nike golf balls and a redeemable Buick Scramble test-drive certificate.

Stramback Memorial golf tourney Monday

This year’s annual Stephen Michael Stramback Memorial Scholarship Tournament, which raises money for scholarships for local high school and community college student-athletes in memory of the former Live Oak High and Gavilan College student who died in an automobile accident six years ago, is set for Monday, June 20 at Coyote Creek Golf Club. This is the second year the event has been held at Coyote. There is a 10:30am check-in and a noon tee-off. After the tourney play is over, there will be a 5pm social hour and a 6pm dinner. Cost is $175 per player. The cost includes greens fees, golf cart, putting contest, mystery hole, tee prizes, unlimited range balls, box lunch and dinner, and a raffle and silent auction. The tourney play will feature teams of four golfers competing in a scramble format and a modified shotgun start. There will also be prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin, and hole-in-one. Proceeds help pay for a series of $500 scholarships for local student-athletes who are awarded based on a combination of athletics, academics and extra-curricular activities.

MH July 4th 5K and Children’s Mile Runs

The Morgan Hill Fourth of July 5K and Children’s Mile Run will be held on July 4 at 8am at PA Walsh Elementary School, 353 West Main Street. The race will take place just before the official parade of Santa Clara County, and many of the parade spectators will be along the course to cheer on the runners. IDI golf tourney at Coyote Creek

The 9th annual Independence Day, Inc. Golf Tournament will be held at Coyote Creek Golf Club on July 1 as part of Morgan Hill’s Fourth of July celebration.

Registration is at noon with a modified shotgun start at 1pm on the Valley Course. The $140 per golfer entry fee includes a box lunch, 18 holes of play on the Valley Course, golf cart, range balls, hosted hors d’ oeuvres during the tournament awards presentation and raffle.

All proceeds from this event go to support the community’s annual Fourth of July Festivities. Morgan Hill’s Independence Day festivities are organized and run by an all-volunteer committee (Independence Day Inc.) and staffed entirely by community volunteers. IDI is financially supported by business sponsorships, private residents’ contributions, and the City of Morgan Hill.

SCBA summer hoops camps, open gyms start Monday

The South County Basketball Association is holding basketball camps for girls and boys at Britton next week. Both camps run from June 20-25, with the girls camp set for 9am-noon, and the boys camp from 12:30pm-3:30pm. Cost is $85. This also includes open gyms on Thursday nights in July. Girls will have access to open gym from 5pm-6:30pm and boys from 6:30pm-8pm.

Live Oak sports camps

Organized by Norm Dow and taught by high school coaches and teachers, the annual Live Oak Sports Camps are continuing through the summer. They include instruction in everything from baseball, softball, basketball and lacrosse to street hockey and science and math, along with plenty of other “camps.” Baseball camp will be held at Britton Middle School, softball camp will be held at Community Park, golf camp will be held at the Gilroy Golf Course, and all the other camps will be located at the Live Oak High gym. There is still plenty of room in most of the week-long camps, which range in cost from $90-$150. Signups are being accepted at the Live Oak gym.

OVYSL fall soccer accepting signups

Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League is now taking sign-ups for the 2005-06 fall recreational season.

Play begins Sept. 10 and ends Nov. 20. Boys and girls ages 4-16 are eligible (birth dates 8/1/1989 to 7/31/2001). Fees range from $65 for U6, $95 for U8 and $120 for U10-U16.

Aquatics Center summer signups

The Morgan Hill Aquatics Center is currently open for registrations and purchases of season passes Monday-Friday noon-7pm. There are also water fitness classes, Masters Swimming, Lap Swimming, Swimming Lessons and the Fun n’ Fit program, which is designed for children ages 5-17. There will be special activities in addition to swimming such as riding the water slide, or jumping off the diving board. Participants must be able to swim one length of the pool. The program is offered from 3pm-4pm at the Aquatics Center.
