Morgan Hill Unified School District was recognized April 25 for its leadership in promoting multilingualism by the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
MHUSD leaders, including Superintendent Steve Betando and Assistant Superintendent Ramon Zavala, were on hand at the county office to receive the Seal of Biliteracy award presented by County Superintendent Jon Gundry.
“It’s a great honor to receive this recognition,” Zavala said. “Our district has long held a strong commitment to educational equity and programs for bilingual and multilingual learners.”
At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, Sobrato and Live Oak high schools had 36 Spanish/English and French/English graduates receive the State Seal of Biliteracy. That number is expected to double this school term, according to the district’s April 27 announcement.
El Toro selected for Tech Academies of Innovation partnership
El Toro Health Science Academy has been selected for the 2017-2020 Tech Academies of Innovation three-year partnership, which is part of The Tech Academy network of model STEM programs.
The Tech Academies of Innovation is an arm of the Tech Museum of Innovation and is a partnership with schools in underserved communities to build model programs for teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
“This partnership with The Tech will deepen the learning experience in the classroom through STEM education,” El Toro Principal Darren McDonald said.
Teachers at El Toro will enjoy three years of cross-curricular professional development to help them bring the engineering design into their classrooms in ways that support Common Core and the Next Generation Science Standards, according to the April 18 announcement. These supports will focus on the engineering design process, mechanical engineering, and software engineering.
