Sobrato High School student Lauren Buckley, seen speaking at a recent school board meeting, created a petition challenging math practices at her high school.

Morgan Hill Unified School District’s top official has lined up a discussion item as part of an Aug. 15 board of education meeting that will cover the high school mathematics program.
The issue was prompted by one Ann Sobrato High School student’s petition demanding change within the math department. That call to order has generated 654 supporters, accompanied by student and parent complaints regarding teachers’ math practices. It has received support and comments as recently as this week.
Sobrato senior Lauren Buckley created her petition, titled “Create Change in the Math Department of Ann Sobrato High School,” on the website change.org in early May.
At the June 20 board meeting, Buckley, along with two other Sobrato classmates, demanded district leadership schedule a special meeting to discuss the matter before the start of the 2017-18 school year.
Although that demand was not met, district officials have spoken with site administrators and a presentation, along with open discussion, is planned for Aug. 15.
The next regularly scheduled school board meeting is Aug. 1.
