Dear Editor,

It was a sad day for us last month when Diana Guertin, owner of Mushrooms Grille & Bar, told us that she was closing her restaurant.

It was sad for several reasons. When we moved back to California 15 years ago, we chose Morgan Hill over San Jose because of its small town feel.

A friend of ours helped us open a restaurant that would reflect the family values and uniqueness of this community, and that restaurant became Mushrooms, so we have a special attachment to the place.

During our search for a restaurant location in Morgan Hill, we came to know and meet several downtown merchants and community leaders who told us how growth would be controlled and the downtown would be valued as a center of our community.

We knew Morgan Hill was the place for us.

When we opened Mushrooms, we were greeted by the community with open arms. We enjoyed several years of success before we and our partners decided to go our separate ways. The restaurant was then sold to Diana. We always felt that Mushrooms was a place we could go to feel at home and have a good meal at a reasonable price.

But now, Morgan Hill has lost an icon. We are saddened by the closing of a long-lived, independently owned establishment and that people seem so excited by the opening of two chain restaurants on Cochrane Road.

We fear the passing of Mushrooms will go unnoticed. We also fear that we have embraced a homogeneous society that values sameness and the familiarity bred by the chain stores and that we will know little of the joy of experiencing a truly distinctive community.

Mushrooms, we are sorry to see you go. Diana, we wish you success and happiness in your future endeavors!

Brad Jones & Cinda Meister,

BookSmart, Morgan Hill
