Monterey Road south of downtown Morgan Hill might not be open in time for the evening commute, as crews continue to repair a ruptured gas line.
About 10 a.m. Aug. 29, a construction crew that was working for the City of Morgan Hill accidentally hit and broke a gas line in the area of Bisceglia Avenue and Monterey Road, according to Morgan Hill Communications and Engagement Manager Maureen Tobin.
Morgan Hill Fire, MH Police and PG&E responded and were able to safely close street access to the area and evacuate 30 residents, Tobin added. Many residents and passersby in the area reported a strong smell of gas before the rupture was repaired.
As of just before 4 p.m., city staff and emergency crews did not know if Monterey Road—which was closed in both directions from Ciolino to Spring avenues due to the emergency—would be open in time for evening commuters.
“Traffic delays should be anticipated and alternate routes taken,” Tobin’s press release stated. “It is recommended that alternate routes be planned for.”
The construction crew that hit the gas line was working on a utility undergrounding project for the City of Morgan Hill.
