The Wild Party, the musical which was once banned in Boston, is based on Joseph Moncure March’s 1928 book-length narrative poem that tells the story about the wild, depraved end of the Roaring ’20s. Andrew Lippa added a book, music and lyrics. “The Wild Party” opened Off-Broadway in February 2000 and has won many awards in its time.

The San Jose Stage Company has gathered 13 talented performers to bring forth this fast-moving production that leaves very little to the imagination. Allison F. Rich (Queenie), Noel Anthony (Burrs) and CJ Blankenship (Black) carry the furious plot line to the ultimate degree with an exhilarating score with the entire cast offering terrific delivery.

Highly controlled direction by David Avalos and exceptional choreography by Brett and CJ Blankenshp, with costumes (what there was of them) by Abra Berman bring an edge to an emotionally violent story that at times pushes the audience to hold its breath. Musical director Lauren Bevilacqua conducts with conviction a fine solid orchestra off stage.

The Wild Party is The Stage’s usual well done show and one of its most off-the-wall productions. It may not be for everyone, but if you choose to dip into some decadent waters you might have an unexpected adventure.
