Spotlight of the Week
Brie Roman, a fourth grader at Nordstrom Elementary School, completed the Oct. 22 Nike Women’s half-marathon in San Francisco with her mother Sandra Roman.
The Nike Women’s Marathon is an annual race which raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Brie ran the race in honor of her grandfather, Frank Nakayama. A 22-year Morgan Hill resident, Frank was a “fighter” of lymphoma for 14 years. Sadly, Brie’s grandfather lost his battle with lymphoma on Aug. 19, just two months shy of seeing Brie accomplish her big goal.
Proudly wearing a picture of her grandfather on her shirt with the words “forever grandpa’s girl” emblazoned across the top, Brie reveled in the support and cheers throughout the race. She and her mother maintained a steady 16-minute-mile pace through the hills of San Francisco, completing the 13.1-mile race in 3.5 hours. After the race, Brie wore her Tiffany finisher’s necklace and her “ran like a girl” finisher’s t-shirt with delight.
