Safeway parking lots. They were located by police thanks to quick
thinking residents.
CHEERS: to police – and the public – for catching the purse snatchers and one of Morgan Hill’s Most Wanted. Gilroyan Lewis Flores, 42, and San Jose resident Richard Ornelas, 22, were arrested in mid-August on suspicion of robbing two women in local Safeway parking lots. They were located by police thanks to quick thinking residents. In the second incident two witnesses followed the suspects for a few miles, but lost sight of them. However, one was able to provide police with a license plate number that led them to the suspect’s home. In addition, police arrested Gabriel Mendoza, wanted for robbery. Good job by all. Now it’s time to find to the menace who assaulted several women earlier this year in Safeway parking lots.
JEERS: to the state for once again raiding local coffers, forcing cities and counties to cut and reduce programs. In an attempt to balance their own budget, state legislators will again take money from Morgan Hill. This time, it’s $12.5 million in Redevelopment Agency funds. The cuts force the city to meet with its labor unions to discuss concessions, and may even lead to additional layoffs. It’s time for the state to learn how to become fiscally solvent without dipping its sticky fingers into local coffers.
CHEERS: to the Morgan Hill police and residents who shaved their heads in support of childhood cancer research, raising more than $12,000. Perhaps Sgt. Jerry Neumayer said it best, when he told reporter Michael Moore: “Kids are innocent and haven’t had a chance to experience the world, and all of a sudden they’re stricken with a life-threatening disease. It’s not a whole lot we’re doing, but it’s nice to show support.” We beg to differ. Events like that bring a community together and are what living in a small town are all about. What you all did was selfless and sends a positive message to all.
JEERS: to the city for a poorly planned and executed Third Street sign program to get people in and out of Third Street business, but kudos for seeing the problem and responding quickly. When construction began on Third Street in late June there were few signs. And when a few weeks later the street was torn up, the signage alerting customers of how to enter Third Street stores was not sufficient. But, city officials listened to merchant complaints and suggestions, took them to heart and installed a new temporary sidewalk and more signs directing customers to Third Street business entrances. Now the anticipation of what the new street will look like is starting to build.
CHEERS: to the Morgan Hill All-Stars’ run in the Bronco World Series. Nicknamed the Thrill, the talented group of 12-year-olds became the city’s first Bronco Division team to reach Pony Baseball’s biggest tournament. The California Regional Champions compiled a 23.3 record this summer, including 22 consecutive wins, but lost to Tai-Yuan Elementary School of Tapei, Taiwan 8- 2.
