Among the desired characteristics of the new superintendent are team building skills, an inclusive leadership style and transparency in decision making, communications and interactions with all stakeholders, according to a draft of the brochure that was approved by the Morgan Hill Unified School District Board of Education Thursday night. The 41 pages of input compiled by search firm The Cosca Group after meeting with some 40 community groups underscored the district’s need for openness and accessibility.

Further, along with having a strong commitment to high levels of student achievement, the board wants someone who, like outgoing Superintendent Dr. Alan Nishino, has experience in developing coordinated, data-driven curriculum.

The board lists the need for collaborative leadership, fiscal support, improved Special Education department and expanded communication systems as critical issues for the new superintendent to tackle.

The board also decided to look for someone currently in the state’s school systems since having a handle on California’s challenging fiscal environment is a primary concern as well.

And, the board rectified two apparent missteps. The board instructed Cosca Group representative Steve Goldstone to add the Charter School of Morgan Hill to the description of Morgan Hill Unified School District, which listed the 300-square-mile district’s other 14 schools and its Home Schooling Program The board also opted to remove “adjusted school boundaries” as a critical issue for the new superintendent to tackle, for fear that the controversial topic would deter potential candidates.

Nishino’s two-month interim contract ends Aug. 31. The new superintendent is expected to be hired in mid-October.
