The Acorns host 32 top northern California teams
Sunnyvale – The Live Oak Acorns softball team recognizes that life isn’t all about winning, there are ups and downs and its important to work hard and give back.

Over the weekend the Acorns hosted the 15th Annual Circle of Champions Tournament at the Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale. Officially called the Annie Lynch Memorial Tournament, the tournament routinely attracts the top programs from northern California. This year 32 teams participated. Proceeds from the tournament go to the American Cancer Society and the Live Oak softball program.

Live Oak won their pool and finished the weekend with wins over San Lorenzo Valley, 8-1, and Half Moon Bay, 7-0, and also tied Branham, 2-2.

The Acorns played well as a team in the tournament with different athletes stepping up in each game.

“The whole team played extremely well,” said Live Oak coach Barry McDonnell. “Each game a different player stepped up and made a difference. Everyone really pitched in and played well.”

Sabrina LaCorte, a key returning player for the Acorns, went 2-for-6, with a double and drove in a run. Sarah Locarnini went 5-for-9 in the tournament, driving in two runs, with three walks and a triple for the Acorns. Alyssa Adamo also drove in two runs for Live Oak, going 3-for-8, with a double. Adamo’s double gave the Acorns the lead in their game against Branham.

April Herrera and Taylor Sutton each drove in three runs for Live Oak and Kelly McDonald added two RBIs, a double and a stolen base. Acorn Brittney Ondich also had a double and drove in two RBIs. Tayna Ferry pitched a shutout against Half Moon Bay.

“The tournament overall was a success,” said McDonnell. “We had 32 teams participate and each got to play three games on Saturday. It was nice to finally get out and play some ball.”

The tournament would usually run for another weekend to wrap up pool play, but due to the tournament being postponed because of weather, there was a conflict with team schedules and reserving the fields.

“We’ll refund a portion of the money teams put in to play,” said McDonnell.

Live Oak opens up Tri-County Athletic League action today against Notre Dame in Salinas at 3:30pm.
