Jose A. “Don Chon” Reynoso passed away in Hollister at the age of 71. He was born in Jalostotitlan, Jalisco, Mexico and came to Hollister from Gilroy in 1976. He owned and operated Hollister Drive In Market on 4th and Line Streets in Hollister, helped form Liga Obrera Baseball League, was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the first recipient of the Mexican American Committee on Education Man of the Year in 1980. In 1987 he was honored as an exemplary Hispanic citizen with Sabado Gigante and was an honoree in the San Benito Saddle Horse Show as a participant in the parade with Associacion de Charros Los Amigos. He married his wife, Elvira, in 1963 in Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, Elvira Reynoso of Hollister, his mother, Rita Reynoso of Mexico, his children and their spouses, Elizabeth and David Reynoso-Bland of Hong Kong, Maria Elena and Gil Barba of Mexico, Guille Reynoso of Hollister, Carlos and Marta Reynoso of Los Banos and Irma and Luis Reynoso-Nunez of Hollister, his brothers and sisters, Salvador Reynoso of Hollister, Juan Reynoso of Salinas, Jose Reynoso of Hollister, Rosario Vasquez of Riverside and Margarita Gonzalez of Sacramento and his 17 grandchildren. Chon had many nephews and nieces which he loved, but especially dear to his heart was Nancy Gutierrez who was especially devoted to him.

Friends can pay their respects on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Black Cooper Sander Funeral Home. The Rosary will be at 7:00 PM on Sunday at St. Benedict’s Church on Fairview Road. The Mass will be on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at 10:00 AM at St. Benedict’s Church. Interment will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery.
