Morgan Hill – Today the Live Oak Acorns welcome 13 other schools to their track for the 3rd annual W.V. “Doc” Raymond Relays meet at 9am.
The relays are held in honor of “Doc” Raymond, Acorn coach Dean Raymond’s father, who died in 1999 and was a major benefactor of the track team over the years.
“Ideally it will be beautiful weather and Live Oak will win all the events,” joked Raymond. “Seriously, hopefully it will go smoothly. It’s a good opportunity for a number of the athletes to run different relays or events or run against different teams they might have not seen.”
The relays are a team-centered event, rather than just individual events, meaning the top three times, heights and distances from each team are recorded and added together for the team time, height and distance. Every event is a relay and according to Raymond an indirect benefit of having all events be relays is it brings a team closer together.
The Sobrato Bulldogs and Gilroy Mustangs will be participating in the relays from the Tri-County Athletic League and along with 11 other area schools.
“I just hope for good weather, good performances and a good turnout,” said Raymond.
The Raymond Relays will mark the second time the Acorns have matched up against the Gilroy Mustangs in a week. On Wednesday Live Oak hosted Gilroy in a TCAL meet and split wins with the Mustangs. The Acorns (1-1 TCAL) girls varsity defeated Gilroy’s girls, 79-56, while the Live Oak (0-2 TCAL) boys team fell to the Mustangs’ boys, 93-41.
“I was pleased with a number of the performances,” said Raymond. “I think we don’t have an extremely talented boys roster, with the girls we have quality we don’t have quantity.”
Live Oak star, Cobbie Jones placed first in the 1600 (5:42) and the 800 (2:34) as well as participating on the first place 4×400 relay team.
“She’s a talented athlete. She came in a did what’s expected of her,” said Raymond.
Acorn Katie Armstrong finished first in the high jump (4’6″) and second in the 100 meter hurdles (19.9) and the 300 meter hurdles (55.6). Live Oak freshman Courtney Robinson won the 200 meter. Her time of 28.3 seconds set a school record for freshman.
Lesley Dedios captured first place for Live Oak in the long jump (12’4.5″) and triple jump (28’2″) events. Teammate Hannah Hart won the 100 meter hurdle (19.1) and 300 meter hurdle (55.3), as well as participating on the first place 4×100 relay team. Acorn senior Lisa Herrera finished second in the 3200 meter (12:48) and third in the 400 (1:20.7), an event she doesn’t normally run.
The Acorns brought up Denae Chappel from the junior varsity team and she responded by placing first in the shotput (27’5″) and the discus (85’6″).
For the Acorns boys team, Dustin Muhn won first place in the 100 meter (11.4) and the long jump (19’8″). Muhn’s long jump distance was more that two feet longer than the second place finisher. Teammate Armando Medina won the pole vault event with a jump of 9’6″ for Live Oak.
The Acorns host the Raymond Relays today and return to TCAL action on Thursday in Salinas against Palma/Notre Dame.
