Sobrato’s first official track meet is positive for young,
inexperienced squad; Bulldogs compete at Raymond Relays today
Morgan Hill – Although the final score of the Sobrato Bulldogs and Salinas Cowboys track and field meet appeared to be lopsided, the Bulldogs take away a positive attitude from their first home meet. Sobrato’s boys varsity were defeated 96-27, while the girls varsity fell 96-25 to the Cowboys.
“Salinas came down with about 130 kids and we were just overwhelmed,” said Sobrato coach Dennis Martin. “We were completely outnumbered, so the scores looked pretty lopsided. It was our first official meet at Sobrato and we were able to complete the whole track meet. Thanks to Salinas and its parents and athletes for helping get it done.”
Rainy weather had caused Sobrato to reschedule all meets prior to Thursday’s at home, so it was the team’s first opportunity to show off their talents.
Standout freshman athlete Lance Wolfsmith recorded two first place finishes for the Bulldogs. Wolfsmith won the 1600 meter (4:37) and the 3200 meter (10:32), finishing both races nearly 30 seconds ahead of his closest competitor.
The Sobrato boys also captured a first place and second place finish in the 400 meter event. Eric Woodruff earned first place in the 400 with a time of 55.76 seconds, Chris Sargent finished second in 56.41 seconds for the Bulldogs. Bill Cambra had three second place finishes for Sobrato in the 110 meter hurdles (18.92), the 300 meter hurdles (47.36) and the pole vault (10′).
For the girls team, the Bulldogs 4×100 relay finished with a time of 57.72 seconds racing against the clock as Salinas didn’t have a team participate. Maria Serrano had the other Sobrato first place finish with her leap of 4’10” in the high jump.
Alex Cervantes had a second place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (18 seconds) and finished third in the 300 meter (57.05) for the Bulldogs. Teammates Katie Alton, Jillian Peterson and Franziska Gellert each earned second place finishes for Sobrato in their respective events. Alton ran the 100 meter event in 14.01 seconds, Peterson had a long jump of 13’5.5″ and Gellert recorded a triple jump of 29’11”. Alton also earned a third place finish in the 200 meter. Cecily Nishimatsu, an all-league soccer player for the Bulldogs placed third in the long jump (11’4″) behind Peterson.
“This was a real positive track meet for the kids, for all of us,” said Martin. “For the younger kids, it was their first time they’ve ever run in competition, which was an eye opener for them.”
“We did absolutely fantastic even though the scores don’t show it,” added Martin.
For the Bulldogs junior varsity girls team Ariel Mosbrucker earned first place finishes in the high jump (4’6″), the long jump (13’10”) and the triple jump (27’7″). Amanda Paul won the pole vault event with her jump of 6′ and S. Solorio won the discus throw of 62’4″. Jenny Tran finished first in the 400 meter (1:08) and teammate Abbie Devaraj won the 3200 meter (14:00). Devaraj finished second in the 1600 meter (6:12).
“We have some good young kids coming up and doing a good job,” said Martin. “It’s always fun to watch the kids come out and compete, especially the ones who have never run before. They did better than they expected. It’s just about getting them over being intimidated. We want to continue getting better and improving at every single track meet.”
Sobrato returns to the track today at the Raymond Relays hosted by Live Oak.
