The Live Oak High School student team of 11th graders James Gabbard and Kathleen Grant, along with freshman Andrew Liu, took home a first place award March 13 at the Santa Clara County Science Fair.
The talented trio’s project, “New Methods of Generating Sets of Intransitive Dice,” won the Mathematics/Computers category of the 53rd annual Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Championship. It also secured them the Grand Prize Alternate Award, which includes an expense-paid trip to the California State Fair, April 15-16, at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
The Live Oak student team received guidance from Lori Mains and Dr. Brian Conrey, Director of the American Institute of Mathematics. More than 1,100 students from 89 schools participated in the science fair.
