Connor Sutton hit a grand slam as part of a five-run first inning to help Gavilan College’s baseball team roll to a 9-5 home win over Cañada on Saturday.

Sutton, a sophomore third baseman from Live Oak High, went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs to help the Rams improve to 17-12 overall and first place at 10-7 in the Coast Conference Pacific Division.

Danny Gutierrez went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Gavilan, which piled up 16 hits. Adam Kocina was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Rams, who also got two hits each from Alika Bantilan (two runs), Isaiah Resendez and D.J. Santellano.

Gavilan starter Erik Barron (5-3) was the winning pitcher. The freshman right-hander went eight innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on nine hits with eight strikeouts.

SOFTBALL

Gavilan suffered a 9-0 loss at Monterey on Tuesday to fall to 12-22 overall and 4-9 in conference.
