The San Martin Animal Shelter gained a much needed donation of pet food and other supplies from the Stratford School’s ambitious student council last week.
The five officers of the private Morgan Hill elementary school’s student council came up with the idea to conduct a fundraiser for the Friends of the San Martin Animal Shelter, a nonprofit that helps support the local shelter which houses abandoned or lost domesticated animals.
The students contacted Shelter Supervisor Brigid Wasson, who told the students the shelter was in need of cat food, cat beds, animal carriers and toys, according to Liz Belaire, mother of Stratford fourth-grader and student council President Blake Belaire.
So Blake and his fellow council members asked their classmates to help by bringing items for a donation box at school, Belaire said.
“The school wanted to support the efforts of (FOSMAS), and Principal Cheryl Damato was enthusiastic about getting Stratford involved,” Liz Belaire said. “We ourselves adopted our dog, Roxy from this shelter, and it was such a positive experience.”
The council – Blake along with Vice President Donovan Damato, Secretary Aziza Calvert, Historian Chloe Borsody and Historian Emily Mallough – stopped by the shelter last Friday to drop off the supplies.
