It’s dark as Hedes at 5 p.m. and it’s a sure bet that some of the clocks in many a home and business are pointing to the wrong time.
What in the world is the use of switching the clocks back and forth twice a year?
Daylight Saving Time (often erroneously called Savings Time) makes about as much sense as watering the lawn in a rainstorm. It’s a misnomer as well. No matter how you break it down, the number of minutes of daylight in a day are the same. It’s light when it’s light and it’s dark when it’s dark. Only the clocks change, and the shift causes way more trouble than it’s worth.
Let’s take the road that Arizona and Hawaii have. The federal law establishing Daylight Saving Time allows states to ignore it, so California could lead the charge for common sense and simply do away with it. People would just have to remember to change the batteries in their smoke detectors some other time. Come to think of it, the newer smoke detectors are equipped with batteries that last 10 years, so even that semi-sensible reason is out the window.
For “old time’s sake” we could spring the clock forward one more time and leave it there so the summer days would last as long as they do now. That would be a nice touch.
Meanwhile, since our culture is all about health information, let’s not ignore this: According to a University of Alabama study, heart attacks increase shortly after the time changes. Speculation is that it has to do with human circadian rhythms.
That should be enough for our Assemblyman, Luis Alejo, to hang his hat on and propose a bill declaring California Daylight Saving Time free.
Pass it and we can all sleep better, stress free when the time change never comes again.
