Each month, the principals of Live Oak and Sobrato High Schools choose a total of four students (two from each school) to spotlight. Live Oak senior Alejandra Cruz, 17, is this week’s Student of the Week.
What inspires you? My mom inspires me. She is a hardworking, strong, loving woman. She sees every day in a positive aspect and is always there for me.
What is your favorite subject in school, and why? My favorite subject in school is history because it is interesting to see how much our country has changed over time. We look at history to see what mistakes we have made in the past, learn from them, and try to not make the same mistakes in the future
If you had the power to change one thing in the world, what would it be? If I could change one thing in the world I would end biopiracy. Pharmaceutical companies should not be able to invade the villages of indigenous people and patent the grains or plants that were of the people to make money. It causes biodiversity depletion and harms the indigenous people.
If you could go anywhere, where would you go? If I could go anywhere I would go to Africa and visit the rural communities. I have always wanted to help the people living in poverty there.
Name one big challenge in your life right now: One big challenge in my life right now would be not letting senioritis get to me. As the end of senior year approaches it’s getting harder and harder to get out of bed in the morning.
What is your dream job? My dream job is to be a pediatrician. I love children and being able to be around them every day would never make my job boring.
If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things could you not live without? I could not live without my iPhone, chai tea and applesauce.
Favorite book: My favorite book is “The Notebook” by Nicholas Sparks.
What are your plans post high school? After high school I plan to go to San Diego State and major in biology.
Something that makes you smile: Pictures of baby hedgehogs and Luke Bryan make me smile.
