Morgan Hill’s Fill the Boot campaign raised almost $35,000 from June 21 to 23, doubling last year’s fundraising efforts.

Firefighters from Cal Fire were out three days in Morgan Hill collecting donation to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association as part of an annual, nationwide charitable effort.

This year, firefighters added an additional day from last year and were at two locations along Monterey Road — at the intersections with Tennant and Main avenues.

Fire Apparatus Engineer Paramedic Herb Alpers said the extra push helped greatly, with Friday raising $8,300 and Saturday and Sunday each raising more than $13,000 for a three-day total of $34,836.30.

He said last year raised about $16,000.

“We want to extend our thanks to all the citizens who were more than generous with their donations,” Alpers said.

The Fill the Boot campaign is a nationwide effort held by the International Association of Fire Fighters as part of its near 60-year partnership with the MDA.

On Friday, firefighters stood in the median along Main and Monterey collecting money from drivers who sometimes stopped traffic so they could give.

“We had two locations and added a Friday event to take advantage of people coming home,” Alpers said.

He said next year will probably be three days again and the fire fighters will look at moving to different locations.

“We may try different locations. There are some other really good intersections in Morgan Hill,” Alpers said. “By trying different intersections, we don’t over extend one area.”
