Morgan Hill Police Chief David Swing delivers his speech to City Manager Ed Tewes during his retirement party at the Community and Cultural Center.

Those who worked with Ed Tewes during his 13 years as city manager sent him off with a round of affectionate words and awarded him with the City’s Distinguished Service Medal at a light-hearted yet “moving” farewell ceremony at the Community and Cultural Center Thursday.

Tewes, 61, last summer announced his resignation after a 40-year career in public service. His resignation is effective Feb. 15, after which he said he will “decompress, and develop a plan for the next stage of my career,” Tewes said.

Tewes’ replacement, City Manager Steve Rymer, said Tewes has been “a great coach, mentor and leader” not just to him but to the City’s entire management staff.

“His style was always to challenge us to do our best, and encourage us to find different ways of doing things. As a result, you can see what’s happened here in Morgan Hill, in the was we’ve built up the community” over the last 13 years.
