The Gavilan women’s basketball team grabbed the lead early and never let go.
The Rams picked up their first win of the season, snapping a five-game losing streak, 52-48 over the visiting Yuba.
Gavilan jumped out to a narrow 28-26 lead at the half, giving the team its first lead in the young season.
Natalia Armstrong led the offense with 13 points, adding seven rebounds and an assist in the game. Kelsey Russell grabbed 11 assists and had three steals for Gavilan. Andreinna Casteneda added five points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Gavilan will be back on the court at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Skyline College in San Bruno. 
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Rams winless at Monterey Pen. Tourney
The Gavilan men’s basketball team had a rough time in Monterey.
The Rams went 0-2 in the Monterey Peninsula Tournament, losing 101-67 to Los Medanos Thursday and 69-64 to American River Friday.
Gavilan put up 42 points in the second half against American River after trailing 40-22 at the half, but would fall just short.
Maurico Medrano led the Rams with 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal. Ramandeep Bassi and Alex Lozano both put up 14 points in that game, while Sean McGahey added 12. 
Kelli Goodman led Gavilan in its matchup against Los Medanos with 14 points. He went 2 for 3 from the line and added three rebounds and two blocks. McGahey put up 13 points in that game and added three rebounds.
Gavilan will play in the Skyline Tournament which runs Friday through Sunday in San Bruno.
