Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Morgan Hill Police staked out a perimeter around an area just north of the city Thursday for several hours, hunting down a wanted parolee.
According to sheriff’s spokesman Serg Palanov, the suspect got away, despite a cordon of officers and the assistance of the California Highway Patrol helicopter.
Morgan Hill police Cmdr. Terrie Booten said the incident began when the suspect, who lives on Dougherty Avenue in unincorporated Morgan Hill, fled after the car he was in was stopped by deputies at approximately 10:40am.
Ten to 15 minutes after deputies began a foot pursuit of the suspect, they called in local police officers to help them establish a perimeter area in north Morgan Hill.
Deputies searched areas overgrown by brush, creek beds and canals and checked several homes in the area, with the helicopter flying low overhead.
MHPD officers occasionally had to break free for calls for service, Booten said, but were on the scene approximately an hour before deputies released them.
Deputies continued their search, but the parolee remains at large, Palanov said.
