When Live Oak freshmen Trevor Watson isn’t going to school, playing tennis or skateboarding with his friends, he is training hard day-in and day-out for local triathlons.

And this past weekend, the training paid off.

On Sunday, the 15 year-old Morgan Hill resident placed first in the boys 16 and under division of the Wildflower Triathlon Festival in Monterey County.

“When I crossed the finish line at the end of the race, I didn’t know I won,” Watson said. “Just knowing you trained for something and you accomplished it is the best thing about it.”

The Wildflower Triathlon, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last weekend, consisted of three races, 1.5k-swimming, 40k-biking and a 10k-run.

The weekend event brought 7,000 competitors from 24 countries to Lake San Antonio in Monterey County.

Watson said that he had been working out nearly every day for the past the past year to prepare for the Wildflower.

In addition to training for triathlons, he plays tennis, cross-country and swims at Live Oak.

Watson reached the tennis finals in the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

His mother, Jennifer Yoder said that she was proud to see Trevor come out on top Sunday.

“He did fabulous,” Yoder said. “I’m proud of him. As a parent, all you can hope is that he can go out and have a good time. All of his hard work paid off.”

Watson and Yoder both said that Trevor’s grandparents have been great supporters.

“They come to all my meets and cheer me on every time,” Watson said.

He said that his mom has been a big supporter as well.

“She drives me to all my practices and meets,” Watson said. “She supports me in everything I do.”

Despite a busy school and sports schedule at Live Oak, Watson sees no sign of slowing down from training.

“I want to come back to Lake San Antonio next year and defend my spot,” Watson said. “I also want to compete in a few half-iron mans.”
